Love school gardens? Call your Senators!

Dear [[First_Name]],Betsey DeVos

For the 90 percent of American children who attend public schools, the school garden or the farm-to-cafeteria program might be their first opportunity to learn about healthy food, pollinators or even what tomatoes, lettuce and potatoes look like outside of a "happy" meal.

We've reached out to you because you have a Republican Senator who could be the vote that blocks DeVos.

Please help protect the gains the good food movement has made in public schools. Please call your U.S. Senators and urge them to vote NO on Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary: 888-897-0174.

Betsy DeVos opposes public education and prefers for-profit charter schools. Why? Because billionaires like her stand to profit off education by short-changing students. That’s what DeVos did with student loan debt.

Not every public school has a garden or farm-to-cafeteria program. We need to start a #politicalrevolution to organize and elect local leaders who understand the importance of health food in schools, and are willing to go further to provide students opportunities in regenerative organic food and farming.

Kids need to learn the connections between the food they eat, their health and the health of the planet.

For the 90 percent, the best place to get this education is through the public schools.

No public school is perfect. Many have been badly neglected. There's nothing wrong with good, not-for-profit, community-controlled public charter schools filling the gaps.

But, we have to stand up for the right of every student to a free public education. And we have to make sure all public schools get the resources they need. We should expand this right from daycare to Ph.D. programs. We have to stop burdening families with education debt.

Please call your U.S. Senators and urge them to vote NO on Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary: 888-897-0174.

The Democrats have already united, along with Republicans from Alaska and Maine, to oppose DeVos, her lack of experience, her conflicts of interest and her hostility towards free, not-for-profit, community-controlled public education.

Please call your U.S. Senators and urge them to vote NO on Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary: 888-897-0174.

Thanks!

P.S. For me, this is personal. I can't afford private school anyway, but I lucked out with a great neighborhood public school in Washington, D.C. that primarily serves low-income kids from immigrant families. My daughter started a garden that First Lady Michelle Obama came to the school with a team of volunteers to expand. The school also serves locally grown fruits and vegetables through the city's farm-to-cafeteria program. In D.C. we don't have a Senator to represent us, so I'm counting on you to stand up for us. Please call your U.S. Senators and urge them to vote NO on Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary: 888-897-0174.
